Risk Assessment

The Microsoft Security Risk Self-Assessment

Download the Microsoft Security Risk Self-Assessment Tool (MSRSAT) and install it on your computer to obtain information and recommendations about best practices to help enhance security within your information technology (IT) infrastructure.

This application is designed to help organizations with fewer than 1,000 employees assess weaknesses in their current IT security environment. It will help identify processes, resources, and technologies that are designed to promote good security planning and risk mitigation practices within your organization.

www.securityguidance.com [The free MS tool is simple to use and gives good basic advice]

Business Risk Profile

Understanding how the nature of your business affects risk is important in determining where to apply resources in order to help mitigate those risks. Recognizing areas of business risk will help you to optimize allocation of your security budget.

Defense-in-Depth

The "Defense-in-Depth" (DiD) concept refers to the implementation of layered defenses that include technical, organizational, and operational controls. This assessment is based on accepted standards and best practices to help reduce risk in IT environments.

Results and Reports

You will be able to view your results immediately after completing the assessment. That results summary will also let you compare your scores against the scores of others in your industry. You may also use the tool to track your company's DiD score by comparing your results with those of a past assessment.

In addition, you will receive a full-length report that describes your company's security posture, based on your answers, and provides industry-recognized best practices and recommendations for achieving those practices. The Report, which you may save as an HTML document for printing and e-mailing, also provides numerous resources to help you achieve a more secure environment.

Areas of Analysis

Unlike the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, which scans and assesses your systems directly, the Microsoft Security Risk Self Assessment Tool is a detailed questionnaire that you fill out. The MSRSAT processes your responses and evaluates your organization's security practices in such areas as Infrastructure, Applications, Operations, and People.
